Why can't they stop killing my plot hooks?!

Players:

The players decided to continue heading to the capital of Thay despite several warnings about liches and other scary things there. The PCs ran into a group of assassins on the way and these assassins fougth pretty hard. The players were weakened a bit but not deterred. They found a note on the assassins saying "Don't let the players follow me to the anomaly to the North" at which point the PCs finally decided to stop annoying the DM and head back into their empire.

They made a brief stop at their castle and told the boy they had bought to make the castle nicer. They gave him 1000 gp to do so and are paying him 1gp per day.

They received the emmisary and found out about the cube and are now heading to the cube. They fought the purple worm ambush on the way.

Will they ever go to Thay?!

Summary

Brittany and Elizabeth spent most of the session herping around trying ot organize things for their castle. They went up to Darom and tried to get info and introduce themselves. Following characters created:
Leader – respectful and nice
Crime Lord – Dick

The players ran into the crime lord due to a good streetwise check. They then flubbed the roll to see that the normal citizens were leaving the street and being replaced by the crime lord's minions. Brittany figured she could take the crime lord on but thankfully didn't as there were close to 30 associates int he streets with him. This crime lord will be in charge of the entire region and not just Darom.

Quin La
Leader – Dick, supposedly harsh upon crime in his city. Fights off incursions from Thay. Doesn't want PCs to meddle
Crime Lord – will be in charge of some things here. Think Kingpin in Daredevil.

They fought trolls on the highway to their destination because I needed a break from rollplaying. Maybe, if we are lucky, they will decide to actually go to Thay with the map that they got from the crime lord in Darom sometime next session!

Post Mortem

It's hard to wrangle the players. They are no a solid 1 – 1.5 sessions behind Marshall's group. We need to bring them back together. This will likely be done by bringing Allie into my side of things.

Quest 3, Session 8
Die Demon, DIE!

Party

Summary

Players started the fight against the large demon in the barn. Elizabeth's character spent most of the fight hidden in the little hallway in front of the dragon's room and casting controller type spells. Brittany went upstairs to handle the archers on the second floor when they were discovered and James caused havoc. Elizabeth caught the demon with a bigby's hand and it had to teleport out of that (which is an action) twice to keep from wasting it's turn. Thus, it only got maybe two rounds of unleashing it's full force on the party. Controllers are appearing quite effective in 5e. James opened with a fireball which set the barn on fire and the fire slowly spread throughout the fight. Towards the end nearlyhalf the barn was on fire. However, Elizabeth's watery sphere can be used to put out fire and it essentially saved the barn. As soon as the fight was done, a cultist ran away out the back of the barn. They did not pursue because of the fire. Later they heard the same cultist running away from the house as he had gone there to find his friends. James hit him in the back with some eldrich blasts and nearly killed him. He played dead but they clever party figured thisout and interrogated. James hit him with a spell to get him to tell everything he knew. Unfortunately due to Cery's speech limitations, they got limited info. They figured out the cultists teleported in from Thay and serve Pho'Fu'Saq and then Brittany brutally murdered the cultists.

Quest 3, Session 7

Party

Summary

The party quickly dispatched the demon and cultist and tried to hide the cultist but Degenel just left a demon sized hole in the corn.

Tried to distract another demon with a clockwork rat but the rat wasn't noticed for a while and then just made the demon run around in circled watching it. They eventually had to fight and kill the demon. Another cultist joined the fight. It was chaos.

They cleared the house destroying the sleeping guards with acid sprays and killing the shadow demons. They think the false flag will help them

Then went to the West side of the barn. Killed the lone guard and the guy sleeping in the trough. Didn't release the prisoner as it was "safer for him to stay in the cell". I think I may have him die for some reason as a condsequence? 

Met the dragon and set it free. It'll help them in the future.

Party

Summary

After tansporting to the same side as Cerys the entire party found themselves with only one way to go. Up to the big spider. As they were climbing, one of the low CR Giant Spiders hit the imp with a web and the imp almost died from the fall. They then dispatched the spiders and ran into the big area where they found Donald fighting a giant spider. Donald slew the spider and was startled to see the party. A very large spider (the huge one) then swooped down and hit Donald. It did not kill him just paralyzed him as it was the spider poison that did the kill. The party fought the giant spider and James hit it with Hold Monster which allowed Brittany to hit it quite hard. A Phase spider then broke James' concentration but they had done enough damage to make things pretty quick.

The party then went back to the front of the cave and took a long rest. They went back to the rats area and found them gone (the spider venom only lasts an hour and the scattered). They then went upstairs and got the plot hook for the farm.

On the way to the farm they found the two hipsters on the side of the road. The didn't fight them opting to try to figure out why they were sketchy. The imp tried to rifle through their bags but they noticed and they eventually left heading North. Their cover story was they were farmers looking for new and exciting things on a holiday.

Imp scouted ahead to the farm and the party crawled throught he corn field. Degenel left a Degenel sized path through the corn. They were discovered at the end of the field by cultists and the session ended.

"That @$$hole!"

Summary

The players finished the main floor of the castle. They didn't open the locked trap door immediately as they don't have lock picking skills. So I gave them the key to it from the top left bedroom. The crawl space in that trap door is 2ft high and heads East then down.

Elizabeth went through the right hallway first and is short so didn't hit hte saran wrap. Brittany, however, did when she followed. It pissed her off. Meanwhile Warren went to flank the rats but they escaped into the wrestling room. Warren made it to the wrestling room first in which he took the challenge of the masked rat. A pretty decent fight ensued with WWE style bouncing off ropes, an attempted slam of the elbow into the face and an attempted trip via sliding through Kyne's legs. A second rat joined in when Kyne got the upper hand. At this point, Brittany and Elizabeth made it to the room. Elizabeth used mirror image to make 3 copies of herself in an attempt to intimidate the rats into giving up, Brittany smashed a rat in the face and killed it real dead. She then continued hitting hte corpse and all the other rats scattered. This was the first dead rat in the entire castle.

In the carpet room, Kyne fell into the carpet trap and the rats attacked when Elizabeth tried to open the treasures. They found the buttons and rags, etc in there. Kyne got the note stuck to his hand in the middle bedroom and they decided there was nothing worth looking into in the storage room. They then went downstairs.

James had arrived upstairs aroudn this point and the swap occured without a hitch. The fun then started. They eventually found James and RPed a bit of a fight about the castle.

Post Mortem

I think the players know what is going on but it, obviously, hasn't been confirmed. It'll be interested to see if they treat James with caution in upcoming weeks or not.

"Let them be judged in the light of Kyne" - Kyne

Party

Summary

The players let the villagers out and entered the BBG room. They went straight for the necromancer and despite my best efforts managed to finish him off before the vampires. He ran into the back room and did the swap. Brittany followed and despite knowing that it was a different necromancer and being very confused decided her character would probably smash the newcomer in the face instead of ask him questions. Thus, despite a meta game knowledge of the necromancer being different they killed him. Later Warren expressed his displeasure at not having a note or something that spelt out exactly what was happening. sigh

After this, they decided to check out a village with an X on it and discovered the village was empty. Forceful entry was present but no other signs of a struggle or blood. Also evidence of it being quite a while ago. Finally, they returned to the king and received their castle seeing right through the veiled comments about not having been there for a while. Castle is a days right roughly east of the main town. I flavoured in the carts for the troll ambush along their journey but this was before they got destroyed so just sketchy guys on the caravan.

Upon arriving at their Castle, they realized it wasn't very nice. They were not surprised as the Iron King had let slip that he hadn't been there in his lifetime. Warren promptly looked for a place for Kyne to set up a little chapel. He found somewhere and decided he would call off for a cleric at some point (he never did before the punting). They went in and found the rats. Were annoyed by Donald trying to bargain for the castle and refused to leave the rats the castle instead favoring evicting the rats to an out building. The rats ran away. The players went to get cats from a nearby farm. The farmer sold them some cats as long as they caught them and paid 1 sp each. The cats were caught and brought back to the castle at which point they were released in the main hall. The cats promptly went to different corners of the room and slept near holes in the wall. The players went through the staircase room (and spotted the trap). The players also went into the hallway and tried to flank the rat that had marbles. The rat got two of them with marbles which pissed them off. They went to the room with the pea shooter rat (right bedroom) and we called it a night there.

My group is behind Marshall's which may cause issues with the punting. We need to speed my group up and/or slow Marshall's down.

Warren was getting very into RPing Kyne… the half growler of mead we split likely helped things!

"If those are beholders I'm leaving"

Summary

The players finally finished off the necromancers. It was a relatively simple task for them but one managed to hit Elizabeth pretty good taking her down to 6HP. As the main necromancer died, he spoke the command word to raise the pit. Unfortunately, Elizabeth had killed about half of the critters in her first fireball and Warren had made the rest afraid with his turn undead. Warren spent some time positioning himself to herd undead while the Elizabeth put them in a force wall and then finally burst them to redeath.

The party then went throught he central door and Warren quickly noticed the shadows on the ground. He turned on his paladin ability to detect undead and I told him there was undead nearby.
"Do I see anything glowing?"
"No"
"You know, I know the direction of the undead because of my ability"
"Look up"
"If those are beholders, I'm leaving"
"Of course they aren't beholders… they are 'Eye Tyrants'" troll face

The beholders spent the entire battle firing 1 ray each round at the players. They hit Elizabeth quite well with a lot of status effects and also managed to hit her with some damaging spells and knocked her down to 36hp (after a 36hp hit). They also managed to put Brittany asleep several times throughout the battle which seemed to confuse her barbarian a lot. Warren's paladin abilities allow him to provide allies within range +4 on saves. This totally saved their butt. Without this ability I would have had TPK session 3.

After a long battle (that was likely more fun for the DM than players) they killed the beholders. They have yet to free the townsfolk, be suprised by the one or finish off the boss necromancer.

Post Mortem

Concentration is still important to keep in mind with Elizabeth.
Elizabeth can't seem to take a hard punch. Spindly wizard.
Warren doesn't dish a lot of damage but his character is surprisingly versatile and annoying!

  • Nothing unusual happened.

Next Session

Release villagers, be shived, go through main door, fight necromancer, see if find hidden room, roll up loot, trap, lots of fun!

Marshall: Quest 1, Session 2
Nerf This!

Party

Summary

Starting where we left off, James continued to be grappled while the rest of the party fought the other vampire.  However, the vampire managed to charm Enkidu and commanded him to protect the vampires to the best of his ability.  Shortly after Lana managed to defeat the vampire, while Duck ran to help Ceres.  Enkidu decided the best way to help the vampires was to seperate the vampire from everyone else, and so he encased him in an airtight room made of stone, while also splitting the party.  Lana became suspicious of Enkidu while Duck and Ceres tried to break through the wall to get at the vampire.  Eventually they broke a hole in the wall big enough for some eldritch blasts to get fired in.  The vampire turned into mist and flew out with Duck and Ceres in pursuit.  Duck tried to kill it but missed, and in retaliation the vampire began drinking Duck's blood.  However Ceres also managed to hit the vampire with a special beam that prevented the vampire from regaining hitpoints, resulting in his demise.  

Meanwhile Lana managed to find the switch for the door in the skull and flipped it, and in return Enkidu decided to wander out the door, and came face to face with all the undead in the room.  He decided to hit the pit of undead with a sunburst, also hitting a few necromancers in the process. The players decided to take a break while I killed off half the undead in the pit.  When they got back the undead decided to rush Enkidu, who responded by icing up the walkways with sleet, causing them all to fall down.  However Enkidu still got a disintegration spell to the face.   

Meanwhile on the other side the vampire was finally vanquished.  The party all decided to go through the other door.  Duck ran up the bridge and bottlenecked the revenants while Lana and Ceres took pot shots at the undead Duck was fighting.  However Duck still took a disintegration spell to the face.  He was still up and raging though.  They managed to make their way through the revenants, though the necromancer on that side still hit Duck with a wall of fire, dealing more damage.  Duck ended up running through the wall though and turned the necromancer into a blood smear.  Then undead climbed up to threaten Lana and Ceres.  While fighting off these undead, Ceres also hit a lot of the undead and the head necromancer with a fireball.

Meanwhile undead finally managed to reach Enkidu, who just turned into a bird and flew to the other side of the sleet storm.  Enkidu would switch back and forth and beat on the necromancer and undead caught in the storm with spells. 

Duck in the meantime managed to kill everything on his side and started to run at the head necromancer.  However the head necromancer casted Bigby's Hand (Arcane Hand) and pushed Duck into the undead pit while cackling fiendishly.  Duck then head to fight off hordes of undead for his life down there.  He was slowly being nicked and cut to death.  Lana decided to try to climb down into the pit to heal Duck but fell in due to the fact that the wall was sheer.  She managed to heal up Duck a bit, but he was still in big trouble.  Meanwhile Enkidu cast Thunder Wave on the head necromancer dealing some damage and pushed the head Necromancer into the pit.  Enkidu did this to basically have him fall into the Duck meat grinder, but the fall and thunder wave damage ended up killing him. 

They're still fighting undead but took out all the big guys.  They find out that Duck and Lana, the two in the pit, were the only ones with rope.  Lana manages to tie a rope around Duck and climbs out of the pit, then pulls him out.  (Let me at 'im!  He would cry out with something like 10 hp left.)  With undead still approaching from the left and more undead about to pop out of the pit, the players were going to have to fight their way out.

Post Mortem

Players can dish out a lot of damage and take a fair bit.  I kept on hitting them with pretty big spells and they would still be up.  Players loved the pit of zombies, especially Peter who had all kinds of fun spells.  

Peter has controlling and blasting spells.  James also has some blasting spells, and can apparentlys end enemies to a random dimension for a round.

Party is far from unhittable; they're very hitable actually, so are relying on a lot of hitpoints.  Even Enkidu can take a lot of damage.  Only half the party has rope.

Next Session

Continue the dungeon crawl.  Party is still in the second room.  They're in rough condition and more undead are about to climb out of the pit, but they'll probably survive just fine.

Such DPS Lack

Party

Summary

The vampires got to chomp down on Warren a bit and used their legendary saving to escape Elizabeth's watery orb. Towards the end of the fight, Elizabeth decided to drop her 20-foot diameter watery orb on top of the skull. After some calculations, we determined this was approximately 31,000 gallons of water which was enough to fill the room with 4 feet of water. Since they had opened the supply room door before this fight, the water started filling that room too to which they encountered a very scared peasant. Warren provided the peasant with a horse so he could return to his family and the peasant went off merrily after leaving a cryptic warning about the eyes. Elizabeth summoned a fish familiar because there was water.

The party then opened the door to the pit room by bashing it open. The water promptly started flooding the pit. The players noticed some delayed fireblasts I had placed on the floor because they had taken so long to open the door Warren ran through without it exploding. Elizabeth dispelled the fireblast and her fish was swept into the pit where it was prompty nomed by an undead. The fight went relatively slowly with the necromancers casting a tonne of spells at the players and the revenant soaking a tonne of damage. The minions from the pit almost made it to the top but Warren played whack a mole and knocked them down. About 10 rounds into the fight, Warren remembered he can turn undead and Elizabeth remembered that she had a fireball. After that point, they were a little happier. The necromancers did not send them into the pit with any hands because shortly after they were cast, Warren bashed one out of existence and the concintration of one necromancer was broken due to being hit by Elizabeth.

We finished with them closing in on the head necromancer and the far one still there. A handful of undead are still in the pit.

Concentration is a mechanic that is important to keep in mind

Notes

  • I made Brittany's character do another rage because they needed it. Otherwise she was basically a copy of Warren with slightly higher damage output for the night

Next Session

Keep on killing them, send them towards the final encounter and big reveal.
